Mesothelial Cells, Cancer And Its Effects

Most of the viscera of the body is covered and protected by layer of specialized cells or a membrane called the mesothelium. The mesothelium has two layers of cells: you immediately surrounds the organ and the other by a thick layer around the previous one. This film itself produces and secretes a lubricating oil between the two layers, allowing organs to move smoothly against adjacent organs and structures (such as expansion and contraction of the lungs, heart, etc. ..)

Depending on where in the body, the mesothelium has different names. The mesothelial tissue that covers most organs in the abdominal cavity called the peritoneum. The membrane surrounding the lungs and lines the chest wall is called the pleura. The heart is covered and protected by tissue called the pericardium.

O mesothelioma Mesothelioma is a disease in which cells become abnormal and divide enormously and mesothelium for any purpose that leads to tumors. Mesothelial cell tumors can be benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Because most mesothelial tumors are cancerous, malignant mesothelioma is often simply called mesothelioma. They can spread and damage nearby tissues and organs as well. Therefore, cancer cells can metastasize, but also from primary site to other parts of the body.

Malignant mesothelioma affects the lining of the large number of body cavities. These cavities are called the serous cavities, house certain major organs such as heart, lungs, stomach, and others.

Malignant mesothelioma has been considered in three forms:

o peritoneal mesothelioma: the peritoneum or membrane surrounding the abdomen.

or pericardial mesothelioma: the pericardium, or lining surrounding the heart.

o pleural mesothelioma: the most common form of malignant mesothelioma and affects the lining of the lung cavity.

The majority of malignant mesothelioma associated with previous exposure to fibrous minerals, asbestos, which is the most important. Asbestos is a mineral that occurs naturally in a strong, flexible fibers can be divided into thin threads and woven. Asbestos was widely used in many industrial products, including cement, brake linings, tiles, flooring products, textiles, and insulation. Especially during the production process, these are easily inhaled or swallowed asbestos during the production process which are small particles that float in the air.

The period between exposure to asbestos and developing mesothelioma is typically 35-40 years. Normally, people who develop mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos for a long time, but some people with only brief exposures have developed mesothelioma. On the other hand, to develop, not all workers who are heavily exposed to mesothelioma.

Before 1970, large quantities of asbestos were used in shipbuilding and commercial. When the health risks of asbestos became known, the production of asbestos slowed considerably in 1970. The government placed restrictions on its use, and alternative materials have become available. Despite these changes, asbestos continues to be used.

Companies dealing with asbestos, and is usually associated with the onset of mesothelioma later in life, including the manufacture of asbestos, insulation, heating trades, shipyard work, and construction.

Types Of Malignant Mesothelial Cells

Malignant mesothelioma, mesothelioma, or simply can be divided into three main types:

- Epithelioid

- Sarcomatoid

- Mixed / biphasic

Of these, epithelioid is the most common (50% to 70% of cases) and has the best chance for cure. Sarcomatoid type is 7% to 20% of cases, while a mixed / biphasic seen in 20% to 35% of cases.

About three-quarters of all mesothelioma cases from the chest cavity (pleura) and is known as pleural mesothelioma. Of cancer that affects the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum) is called peritoneal mesothelioma and which influence the "sac as" the space around the heart (pericardial cavity) is called pericardial mesothelioma. Mesothelioma from time to time also affects the covering layer of the testicles. However, the latter two cases are quite rare.

The diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma

Tumors of the mesothelium can be benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). So if you have symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain / abdomen, or abdominal swelling, contact your doctor immediately.

After the first X-rays and scans, the doctor may look inside the chest cavity (pleural tumor in the case) with an instrument called a thoracoscope and the test is called thoracoscopy. In case of tumor in the peritoneum, the doctor can go through laparoscopy with the aid of a tool called peritoneoscope. Finally, if the abnormal tissue is found, then a biopsy is performed, whereby a piece of natural fabric is cut and placed under the microscope for analysis.

After confirming the diagnosis of mesothelioma, it is also important to determine its phases, whether it is localized or advanced stage. In the localized stage, the cancer is found in the lining of the chest or diaphragm or lungs. Advanced malignant mesothelioma can again be divided into three phases: Phase II, III and IV. In phase II, the cancer spreads beyond the chest wall to the lymph nodes and in phase III, it spreads through the chest wall, center of the chest, heart, through the diaphragm or the abdominal wall, etc. The final step or the fourth is where the cancer has already spread to distant organs.

Treatment

Depending on the stage of cancer, its location and history of health, age and medical patients are three types of treatment the couple of patients with malignant mesothelioma - surgery (to remove the tumor), radiotherapy (using high-energy rays) and chemotherapy (using a combination of drugs). This apart, if there is fluid in the chest or abdomen so the doctor had to drain out, and the process is seen as thoracentesis and paracentesis, respectively.

So be aware of the disease, so that you can prevent the onset lot.
